Dr. Justin Bunting has an active career as a percussion educator, solo performer, chamber player, orchestral musician, clinician, and composer. He has performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and the Great American Brass Band Festival. He currently serves as Lecturer in Music, Theory & Percussion at Western State Colorado University having previously served on the faculties of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Winston-Salem State University.
As an orchestral musician, Justin has performed with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, Winston-Salem Symphony, and the Salisbury Symphony. He has also appeared with the North Carolina Opera Orchestra, Greensboro Opera Orchestra, Greensboro Light Opera & Song, and the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, Justin is a founding member of the North Carolina Brass Band and Gate City Percussion. He appears on those groups' releases First In Flight and Praxis, respectively. Performances also include the Mars Hill Guest Artist Percussion Residency, Music for a Great Space, Greensboro Fringe Festival, and the ARTCORE concert series (Wyoming).
Active in the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), Dr. Bunting currently serves on the World Percussion Committee and is a former member of the Collegiate Committee. In addition to performing at PASIC, he has appeared PAS Days of Percussion in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Ohio.
Dr. Bunting’s book Music Theory on Marimba: Connecting the Classroom to the Practice Room is a collection of ten original beginner to intermediate four-mallet marimba solos that directly integrate music theory and marimba technique. It has received praise from some of the most respected percussion educators in the United States. He has been a part of commissioning, premiering, or composing more than ten works for percussion including Ivan Trevino's Electric Thoughts. Two of his works, the world/multiple percussion solo "Across the Floor" and an arrangement of the Dave Matthews Band song "#41" for solo vibraphone, are published by Bachovich Music Publications. He has also composed a piece for world percussion ensemble, and collaborated to compose two world percussion duets.
Justin earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Performance and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Music Theory from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, as well as a Master of Music in Percussion Performance from Belmont University and a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from The Ohio State University. He has studied with acclaimed percussionists Eric Willie, Neeraj Mehta, Kristopher Keeton, Christopher Norton, Susan Powell, and Joseph Krygier as well as drum set and world percussion with Chester Thompson and Todd London, respectively.
Dr. Bunting is an Educational Endorser for Grover Pro Percussion and a member of the D'Addario/Evans Education Collective.
